Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Druva inSync?
Druva inSync is software which automatically backs up and archives the files located on your Dickinson provided and supported Windows/Mac desktop or laptop computer to a backup server on campus. Druva inSync will not be installed on lab computers or student worker computers, only college owned staff and faculty computers.
2. Why is Druva inSync being installed on faculty and staff campus owned computers?
Druva inSync is a disaster recovery option in the event a campus owned computer suffers a catastrophic hardware failure, is lost or stolen or the files stored locally on the computer are deleted accidentally.
3. What will Druva inSync archive?
Druva inSync will backup and archive any files/folders located on the Desktop, in the Documents, Pictures and Music/Video folders as well as locally-stored mail and browser favorites/bookmarks.
4. What won’t Druva inSync archive?
Druva inSync will NOT backup and archive any files/folders outside of your normal user profile (or ‘home’ folder).  For instance, if you keep files in a folder at the root of C: (in Windows) or outside of your Users folder (Mac), on an external USB drive, etc. – these items will not be archived.  Druva inSync will NOT archive any installed programs or applications as those are installed in the Programs folder and are not located in the profile/home folder.
5. How is this different than my folder on the ADMIN server (a.k.a. the ‘P: Drive’)?
Each employee has server space on the ADMIN server in a folder titled after their username which serves as convenient backup space.  For the nightly backup to capture folders/files on the ADMIN server, they must be manually copied there or permanently stored there by the employees.  The purpose of Druva inSync is to automatically archive folders and files which may or may not exist on the ADMIN server as well as data which employees may not know how copy to the ADMIN server (such as locally-stored mail, favorites/bookmarks, settings, etc.) computer before it is sent over the network to the campus server.
6. Who can see the files that has been backed up and archived to the server from my Dickinson owned computer?
Only you and the Druva inSync server system administrator (LIS) have access to restore the files which have been backed up and archived from your computer.  Druva inSync encrypts and compresses all data on your computer before it is sent over the network to the campus server.
7. Where are my actual backups stored?
Your backups are stored on a server on the Dickinson College campus, not in 'the cloud', to ensure the security of your information.
8. When does Druva inSync backup and archive my data?
Once your computer is turned on Druva inSync the backup archive process will begin. Druva inSync backs up and archives a ‘snapshot’ of your data every 8 hours. No need to do a thing!
9. If I have a Dickinson College owned laptop, do I need to be on campus for the synchronization to occur?
No, if the laptop is off campus and has internet access, Druva inSync will still be able to back up and archive your data back to Dickinson.
10. How long are the backed up and archived files kept on the server?
As Druva inSync backs up and archives a ‘snapshot’ of your data every 8 hours, multiple versions of documents are stored enabling access to older revisions of documents from the previous 7 days, weekly backups up to 3 weeks and monthly backups up to 3 months.
11. How do I know if Druva inSync is installed on my computer?
