Computer Name & Workgroup Settings

Each computer on Dickinson's network must have a unique name. The majority of computers ship with generic names such as "OEM Computer." When this is not changed, individuals on Dickinson's ResNet will see error messages and may not be able to access the Internet or campus network drives.

Open the Control Panel.

Choose System and Maintenance.

Then choose the System control panel.

The System control panel will appear.

Click on Change settings.

Note: Any option with the Windows security shield next to it will require an extra step to authorize the action. You will be asked to enter an Administrator's password if you are not currently logged in as an Administrator of your computer.

The System Properties window will appear.

You may type in a description of your computer, if you like. This does NOT change your computer name.

To change the name of your computer:

Click on the Change... button.

The Computer Name Changes window will appear.

Type your username in the Computer name: field.

Your username is everything before the "" part of your email address.

Select Workgroup:

Type RESNET in the Workgroup box .

Click on OK.

A window will then pop up welcoming you to the RESNET workgroup.

Click OK.

Another window will pop up telling you you must restart. Click OK.

Restart your computer for the network settings to take full effect.
