GIS Resources available at Dickinson
Software
ArcGIS
A suite of geographic information system (GIS) software products produced by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI)
Licensing
Dickinson has a new ESRI site license that provides unlimited access to any of the following ArcGIS components, on any college-owned computer (PC only):
- ArcGIS 9.3 Desktop and Extensions
- ArcView 3.3 and Extensions
- Enterprise Server Applications
- Software Development Kits (SDK)
- Mobile Applications
Availability (current as of 2/18/09)
- Public computer labs:
- Information Commons, HUB Microroom, Stern, Denny, Old West
- Selected classroom labs:
- e.g., ICC, Kaufman, Anthropology
- Available for installation in other classrooms and labs upon request
Data
ESRI
- Data & Maps Kit
- A set of annual map data that is included at no additional cost with ArcGIS software and preconfigured to work with ArcGIS products. Available for use by anyone on campus.
Online
There are many, many sources of GIS data available online, some better than others – many free, others not. A very small sample of the better ones include:
- PASDA – Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access
- American FactFinder – U.S. Census Bureau
- NHGIS – National Historical Geographic Information System
- USGS – The National Map Seamless Server
Training
ESRI
Virtual Campus – A program of Web-based, self-study lessons related to GIS technology and ESRI software, ranging from 2 to 30 hours each. Dickinson’s ESRI site license provides free unlimited access to many of these lessons. Available to any Dickinson College faculty, staff, or student (see http://training.esri.com/).
Workshops
Hands-on workshops related to GIS technology and applications are offered periodically throughout the semester. Check Compass or the LIS Teaching and Learning website (http://lis.dickinson.edu/Teaching/) for schedules.
