RSS Feeds
RSS and related formats, such as Atom, are types of web feeds that allow web page content to be sent "live" to subscribers. These feeds allow subscribers to be notified whenever new content is published on a particular web page, which frees users from having to return periodically to that web site or clutter their inboxes with email notifications. If a web page offers an RSS feed, it will usually feature the word "subscribe" and at least one of the following symbols - ,
,
. To subscribe to these feeds, users must employ a reader or "aggregator", and there are many free ones available online that can be easily downloaded.
The Dickinson College library is now offering several RSS feeds. For example, by subscribing to the "New Acquisitions" RSS feed, a patron would be able to see new titles as they are added to the library's shelves, rather than having to periodically check the catalog.
